According to Manos Raptopoulos, SAP’s Global President of Customer Success for Europe, APAC, the Middle East, and Africa, the difference between 90% and 100% accuracy isn’t a small gap. It’s existential.

Ask a consumer-grade large language model to count the words in a document, and it will miss by roughly ten percent. That might be fine for drafting emails or generating memes. In an enterprise setting, where a single hallucination can corrupt a supply chain order or misstate a financial report, ten percent error is a disaster. Raptopoulos puts it bluntly: the operational distance between near-perfect and perfect is absolute. There is no room for statistical guesses when the stakes involve cash flow, compliance, and customer trust.

The Governance Moment: Treating AI Like a Workforce, Not a Tool

Corporate boards are waking up to a new reality. Generative AI systems have evolved from passive tools into active digital actors capable of planning, reasoning, and orchestrating workflows autonomously. These agentic systems interact directly with sensitive data and influence decisions at scale. Raptopoulos argues that failing to govern them exactly as you would govern a human workforce exposes the organization to severe operational risk.

He warns about agent sprawl, a phenomenon that mirrors the shadow IT crises of the past decade. Only now, the stakes are categorically higher. Raptopoulos insists that corporate boards must resolve three baseline issues before deploying agentic models at scale. First, who holds accountability when an agent makes a mistake? Second, how do you establish audit trails for machine decisions? Third, what are the exact thresholds for human escalation? These questions are not hypothetical. Geopolitical fragmentation makes them urgent.

Sovereign cloud infrastructures, AI models, and data localization mandates are now regulatory realities in major markets spanning New York, Frankfurt, Riyadh, and Singapore. Enterprises must embed deterministic control directly into probabilistic intelligence. This is not an IT project. It is a C-suite mandate. If you think you can deploy the same AI model across all regions without adaptation, you are courting regulatory disaster.

The challenge is that each jurisdiction has its own rules about where data lives, who can access it, and how decisions are audited. An agent trained in one region might violate privacy laws in another. Boards need to understand that governance is not just about internal risk. It is about navigating a fragmented global landscape where one wrong move can trigger fines, sanctions, or worse.

Data Foundation: The Dirty Secret of Enterprise AI

Here is the uncomfortable truth. AI systems are entirely dependent on the quality of the data they operate upon. Raptopoulos calls this the data foundation moment. Fragmented master data, siloed business systems, and over-customized ERP environments introduce dangerous unpredictability at the worst possible moments. If an autonomous agent relies on fragmented foundations to provide a recommendation affecting cash flow, customer relations, or compliance positions, the resulting operational damage scales instantly.

Extracting tangible enterprise value requires advancing beyond generic large language models trained on internet-scale text. True enterprise intelligence must be grounded in proprietary corporate data. Orders, invoices, supply chain records, and financial postings embedded directly into business processes. Raptopoulos argues that relational foundation models optimized specifically for structured business data will continually outperform generic models in forecasting, anomaly detection, and operational optimization.

But getting there is painful. The sheer operational friction of making an over-customized ERP environment intelligible to a foundation model halts many deployments. Data engineering teams spend excessive cycles sanitizing fragmented master data just to create a baseline for the AI to ingest. When a relational model needs to accurately interpret complex, proprietary supply chain records alongside raw invoice data, the underlying data pipelines must operate with zero latency. If the data ingest fails, the model’s predictive capabilities degrade instantly. The agent becomes functionally dangerous to the business.

Intent-Based Interfaces: The Employee Interaction Shift

Enterprise application interaction is transitioning from static interfaces to generative user experiences. Raptopoulos flags this as the employee interaction moment. Instead of manually navigating complex software ecosystems, employees will express their intent to the system. Imagine telling the software, ‘Prepare a briefing for my highest-revenue customer visit this week.’ The AI agents orchestrate the necessary workflows, assemble surrounding context, and surface recommended actions.

That sounds great on paper. But adoption among the workforce remains conditional upon trust. Employees will only embrace these digital teammates if they believe the system won’t hallucinate critical details or surface incorrect recommendations. Building that trust requires transparency in how decisions are made and clear channels for human override. It also requires rigorous testing before deployment.

The future of enterprise AI is not about flashy demos or viral chatbot gimmicks. It is about getting the fundamentals right. Governance, data quality, and trust are not nice-to-haves. They are the foundation upon which sustainable profit margins depend. Boards that ignore this reality will find their margins eroding faster than they can blame the algorithm.
