Data is often called the new oil, but anyone who has tried to refine it at enterprise scale knows the analogy breaks down fast. Crude oil flows. Enterprise data tends to sit in silos, locked behind incompatible schemas, ownership disputes, and legacy infrastructure.

Jerome Gabryszewski, HP’s AI & Data Science Business Development Manager, sees this friction every day. Before the AI & Big Data Expo in San Jose, we asked him where companies hit the wall. Gabryszewski advises clients to treat model updates exactly like code deployments. Nothing goes to production without a validation gate. That means MLOps pipelines with automated drift detection and human-in-the-loop triggers before retraining kicks in. Data poisoning, he points out, is as much a provenance problem as a security one. You need to know exactly where every training sample came from and who could have touched it.

The clients who get this right are not always the most technically sophisticated. They are the ones who embedded AI governance into their risk frameworks before they scaled. Governance first, scale second. It sounds boring until a model starts hallucinating on customer data at 3 AM.
